Whilst I agree that Lionel’s return was handled in a far superior manner to that of the gun-toting nutcase Martha’s, I think the producers shoot themselves in the foot slightly when they have credible actors like John Glover back- it really exposes what Smallville has been missing for the last 2-3 years.

I really enjoyed this episode. The internal machinations of the Luthor family were always one of the best plotlines in earlier seasons, and with evil Lionel back for at least a few more episodes it guarantees that the latter half of Season 10 won’t just be Clois lovey dovey plots and a few more brainwashed Darkseid minions. Lionel’s next move is anyone’s guess- but I assume that contact will be made between him and the Lex clone, setting the scene for the mature Lex to emerge (and potentially Tess to be eliminated). Ultimately the writers will presumably kill Lionel off again (there’s not enough room for two Luthors at the top!) but I think this is another sign that Michael Rosenbaum will (covertly) return- the presence of John Glover must be a good selling point for a cameo return towards the end.

I agree that Ultraman was good, although there clearly wasn’t enough of him. The writers successfully created a new evil Clark persona who was completely different to Bizarro, Kal, or Silver K Clark. He was just a good old-fashioned pure evil indulgence, making a pleasant change from the continuously morally-ambiguous Tess.

I just hope that there are more episodes like this. I’d happily trade in episodes like Isis, Escape, Power and Roulette for one Lionel Luthor episode.

As usual, it’s really nice having to look forward in reading your reviews. You totally covered everything I liked and disliked about this episode. What totally amazes me in this one is the fact how Lois really knows Clark very well, seeing through his eyes – again fulfilling Lois’ destiny being the key to Clark’s. I also love how Oliver felt lost and inappropriate for Lois in the alternate universe, which makes the characters consistent in all of their feelings and disposition. Curiosity dawned upon me after evil Clark went back to his own universe – what will the alternate Lois do now after good Clark sweet-talked her? I just love how some parts of the episode are open-ended, leaving you to think what the characters would do after these chain of events. Over-all, for me, this episode provided a massive display of various emotions. Would have love also though if evil Clark was shown a bit more. Kudos!
