Usually when an episode non-Clark centered is aired; I am left with feeling loss. Why a loss? Sorry, I am a Tom Welling fan and this is supposed to be a show about him. But, it was nice to see how Ollie became the Green Arrow. And God knows that Smallville has to tie in everything just right. Yeah, when did they ever do that before? Most of the time the right hand has no idea what the left hand did 3 weeks ago. They suddenly came up with this notion that everything must be tied up in a neat little bow. Case in point: Tess Mercer. Did she really need to fit into the equation where she had a connection with someone in the group? Extra added fluff in my opinion.
What did I like? I liked that Ollie told Clark that he was afraid of being honest with his friends, trusting people and above all things, embracing his destiny. I have to agree with that 100%. You could see the look on Clark’s face that he completely agreed. I also liked how Ollie called Tess Mercy. Do you guys realize that her name is homage to two great Lex leading ladies? First Miss Tessmocher, Lex’s buxom trophy girlfriend from the Superman movies. And now with the introduction of Mercy by Ollie we get his kick ass body guard from the Superman cartoons. I love this idea and on the subject of Tess, she is major kick ass. I think she will be a force to be reckoned with. To the like column, I liked how Clark mentioned that he has watched the Lana video more than once, admitting that he still has feelings for her. I know it is petty of me but they do keep mentioning her. After all, Lana Lang has been an important part of Clark’s life for many years. You can’t just right her off so easily to rush in the Clois thing. I don’t think they are there just yet, even though Chloe wants to think so. And I liked that they cleared up for Ollie that Lionel killed his parents. About time they tied up a loose end. Also I like that Clark performs an act of heroism and whoosh! He disappears. Very Superman-esque!
What did I not like? I hate how Chloe is with Davis. Look, she is engaged to Jimmy. Where has he been? Should he not be around more if they will be getting married in 7 episodes? And Ollie and Lois? Lois still has major feelings for him and she made the same stupid comment of how she could not date a man with a hero complex. And yet she marries one someday!!! I don’t see how that will work with this continuity. What is this a set up for a love triangle? Please! Do we really need to keep doing this? It is old, guys? Also, they had two different charatcers say the same thing really close together. Clark conversation with Chloe about Ollie needing to go to the hospital. 10 minutes later, Lois said same thing. New lines would be great guys! What about Chloe’s new power? Uh, did this come from now where or what? Yes, I know they have been building to it since episode 1 of this season, but it was almost random if you ask me, and this review is all me!
I want to speak about Tom for a minute. I love him dearly. I feel like he is a wonderful actor and director. Not to mention that he has such an effect on the female population and even some males. But, I can’t believe I am saying this, as of late he seems a little odd. Like he is acting with no real feeling behind it. Oh I see he gets mad and confused but what happened to the heart and soul he used to put into his performance? Did it leave when his pals Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk left? And on the Kristin note, will his delivery improve when she returns? Is it all about their chemistry and what a difference she makes on the character he plays? We shall see in 7 episodes.
It was not all a loss. It had its moments but by and large I have not been exactly thrilled with this season. This particular one took a while to actually get started. They could have cut some things from the story and it would have been okay. I do want to see how Chloe gets out of telling Davis her secret but keeping it from her fiancé? Is it really over with Ollie as Lois claims or is it under the surface? Will Clark embrace his destiny more so than he already is? All these to be answered, hopefully, in episodes to come. Keep watching for these and other question to be answered.
